Chapter Seventeen

After school, I go to the park yet again. So far, we’ve gone three days in a row, and I tried to get through to George, but no luck. This time, I’m determined to talk to him. Maybe because I’m all pumped from Lindsay’s speech. The place is empty, except for the four guys playing ball.

I walk over to them. “Hey.”

George turns around, mutters something under his breath, then turns back.

“George, can we talk?”

“Get the hell away. No one wants you here.”

The guys resume playing.

“Look, I know you have a power, so quit pretending you don’t and listen to me. I swear I just want to help you.”

The guys stop and stare at George, whose back faces us. He slowly turns around. “What did you just say?” He steps closer until he’s in my face.

I hold up my hands like shields. “I just want to help you. You don’t have to go through it alone. It’s great that you know how to block people out, but you can learn so much more.”

His face boils with rage. “What the hell are you talking about?” He moves even closer, forcing me to step back. I try to hold my ground, but this guy is huge.

“You have telepathy,” I say.

“What?”

“You can read minds.”

He turns around and scoffs to his friends. They just stand there, confused. He turns back to me. “I’m not a freak like you.” He shoves me and I tumble to the ground. My palms sting.

I get up, feeling my anger rising. “You don’t want to mess with another telepath, man.”

“I’m not a damn telepath!”

“You’re lying.”

He makes a fist and slams it into my side. I double over and cough, clutching my sides. Man, I knew he was strong, but not that strong. I hide the pain and stand again. “Don’t be a coward. Have a real fight. A telepathic fight.”

He looks like he has no clue what I’m talking about. His lip curls up and he swings his arm for another punch, but I duck out of the way. I don’t want to fight him, not like this. Telepathic battles can be really dangerous, but I can always leave his mind. With physical fighting, he has the upper hand, especially because I can’t control his mind.

“Let’s just talk.”

He shoves me some more and kicks me. Fighting the searing pain, I scramble to my feet and glare at him. I don’t care that he’s some kid who needs help with his powers. I’m not going to let him beat me like this.

He screams, clutching his head and dropping to the ground. He rolls around, shouting as though his mind is on fire.

Then it stops. I look around. All the guys are crouched on the ground, covering their heads with their arms. Their shocked eyes are on me. I lower my gaze to the floor and find George lying there. Is he dead?

Oh, no. Did I…did I do that?

Looking around some more, I see the trees, grass, and playgrounds are gone. All that’s left of them are piles of dirt, dust, and debris.
